If you’ve ever longed to go back to the 1980s, Quinault Beach Resort & Casino can take you there. At least, if you were a VIP customer this past New Year’s Eve.
Every year, the Ocean Shores (WA) casino throws a big party to thank VIP customers and remind them why they should plan their entertainment close to home. Off the main I-5 corridor, Ocean Shores is not your usual casino location, so its New Year’s parties are a big part of its marketing. VIP patrons are treated to a buffet, entertainment, and exciting balloon drop. They are also given 15x points to spend in the casino after midnight.
Every New Year’s Eve, the casino chooses a different theme. This year, it was the 1980s.
What represents the 1980s better than that infamous, brilliantly colored six-sided cube? To create paper versions of these 80s classics, the resort’s Nicolette Shanklin, creative marketing coordinator, and Jody Cadle, direct mail coordinator, worked with Red Paper Plane to create mailers featuring bright neon colors and the theme “Party like it’s 1985.” Inside each was a Pop-Up Cube closed with zip strip. When patrons removed the strip, the Cube exploded open into a bright, life-sized simulation of the famous puzzle.
“People LOVED it!” Shanklin beams.
Thanks to this highly creative campaign, Quinault Resort packed the house, rocked the dance floor, and racked up the room reservations. Approximately 80% of the people receiving the promotion attended the party.

What to do with the few Cubes left over? Every year, Shanklin is responsible for decorating a table at the annual Chamber of Commerce fundraiser. She has had this responsibility every year for the past five years. This year, she won for “the most fun table.” “It was so great to finally win!” she declares.
